Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced on Wednesday that the annual toll pass will help the common man save up to ₹7,000. Gadkari shared details about this initiative on the social media platform X and stated that the government has issued a notification regarding the same.
Explaining the calculation, the Union Minister said, “Under the annual toll pass, you are allowed 200 trips, where one trip refers to crossing a single toll plaza. For instance, if you spend ₹50 per toll, 200 trips would cost ₹10,000. However, the annual pass is available for just ₹3,000, enabling the common man to save up to ₹7,000.”
Gadkari clarified, “The annual toll pass applies only to national highways and not to roads under state jurisdiction.” In his X post, he added, “In a historic initiative, starting August 15, 2025, a FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000 will be introduced. This pass will remain valid for one year from the date of activation or for 200 trips, whichever comes first.”
The minister further wrote in his post, “This pass is specifically designed for non-commercial private vehicles (cars, jeeps, vans, etc.) and will enable seamless travel across national highways. A dedicated link for renewing the annual pass will soon be available on the Highway Travel App and NHAI/MoRTH websites, making the process simple and user-friendly.”
Additionally, Gadkari announced plans for a new system that will eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. Earlier in April, the government had revealed that a select number of toll plazas would implement the ‘ANPR-FASTag Best Barrier-less Tolling System’ to ensure seamless, hassle-free vehicle movement and reduce travel time.
The ministry had explained that this advanced tolling system combines ‘Automatic Number Plate Recognition’ (ANPR) technology, which identifies vehicles via their number plates, with the FASTag system, which operates on Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). Under this system, tolls will be collected using high-performance ANPR cameras and FASTag readers, eliminating the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas.
